Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Dr. Garland may recommend a tooth extraction near Hurstbourne in the following scenarios:

  • For patients undergoing orthodontic treatment who don’t have enough room in their mouth to properly align their teeth.
  • When a tooth is decayed beyond the point where a tooth-colored filling or dental crown can fix it.
  • If a previously treated tooth becomes reinfected.
  • When gum disease has eroded the supportive soft and hard tissues surrounding a tooth, making it feel loose.

If you are experiencing any abnormal dental symptoms, like pain when biting down, or it’s simply been more than six months since your last checkup and cleaning, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with us so we can conduct an exam and determine if one or more of your teeth need to be removed.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

You’ll be happy to hear that the very first step of the entire treatment process is numbing your mouth thoroughly so you don’t feel anything. Once you’re completely numb and ready to begin, Dr. James Garland will grip the tooth in question with special tools before gently rocking it back and forth. When it’s ready to be removed, he will do so before caring for the extraction site.

Note: If the tooth that needs to be removed is underneath the gumline, then the treatment process will look a bit different. In that case, our talented emergency dentist will create a small incision in your gums so they can access and remove the tooth.

Following your tooth extraction, you will need to dedicate some time to recovery. That includes:

  • Avoiding strenuous physical activities, including running and lifting weights
  • Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • Eating a liquid and soft foods diet
  • Taking over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication as directed
  • Not spitting, drinking through a straw, or smoking
  • Keeping your mouth clean to prevent an infection

If you’re struggling with chronic tooth pain or have another reason to believe that you may benefit from a tooth extraction, don’t hesitate to reach out to our Louisville dental team to schedule an appointment. From there, we can determine the root of the problem, the necessary treatment, and the best way to move forward!
